Known in history as “The Great Chief Justice,” Marshall was the longest serving Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Many historians say that Marshall played a significant role in the development of the entire American legal system. His death of July 6th, 1835, was marked with public displays of grieving. In Philadelphia, PA, the Liberty Bell was cracked while being rung in tribute to him.
