Marijana Petrovic

In the oil paintings of Serbian artist, Marijana Petrovic one can see the recurring motifs of landscapes and cities; her specialty is capturing the driving force and rhythm of the environment. Using a thick, textured impasto technique with a spatula, this artist focuses on tactility and using color as a means of expression. For her, color is a symbol of life as well as a means of expressing her deepest feelings and experiences. Shades of yellow and ocher dominate each canvas, often contrasted with tones of blue and purple. Complementary shades of red and burgundy underpainting loom beneath every surface.

Petrovic’s unique visual vocabulary is characterized by large brushstrokes that move in a certain rhythm which evoke the harmony of movement in throughout all creation.  Marijana Petrovic sees the expression of the soul in nature: particularly trees and flowers. Much like Van Gogh, Petrovic sees painting as “working oneself through an invisible iron wall that seems to stand between what one feels and what one can do”.
