  • The death spiral is a figure skating term used to describe a spin involving two partners. Russian skaters, Sergei Grinkov and Ekaterina Gordeeva were famous for the athleticism and romanticism inherent in their performance of the death spiral. Grinkov and Gordeeva won almost every competition they entered; out of 31 competitions at senior and professional levels, they placed first 24 times. By 1989, the skating partnership had grown into a romantic one. They married in 1991. On November 20, 1995, while the pair were rehearsing in Lake Placid for opening night of their upcoming tour with Stars on Ice, Grinkov collapsed and died at age 28 from a massive heart attack.
