Popular from the late 1950s through the 1970s, the French twist is a common “updo” hairstyling technique created by gathering the hair in one hand and twisting the hair upwards until it turns in on itself against the head. Not only was the sculptor inspired by the twirling long hair, but also by the sensual turning of this female’s torso as she goes about her morning ablutions.
